Arushi Nayar
A Glimpse Into a Vast, Expansive Internal World
Let me introduce myself. I am a multidisciplinary artist and art educator living in New Delhi. I work with drawing, painting, performance art, video art, sculpture, music, writing, and storytelling. My art career has spanned India and Australia - I have a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from National Art School, Sydney, Australia; a bachelor’s degree in Mass Media and Mass Communication from Indraprastha College, Delhi University; and a DELF B1 diploma in French. I have held both solo and group exhibitions in Australia and India, with nearly 100 artworks sold around the world, held in public and private collections in India, Australia, UK, USA, France, and Dubai. I have received an award in Australia, as well as a grant from Arts NorthWest. As an art educator, I currently work with children with disabilities (or special needs, as the earlier term used to be), in New Delhi; and have also conducted workshops at Gunnedah Bicentennial Gallery, Australia.
My art practice is a celebration of being alive; of hard-won freedom; and of healing, strength, and the human spirit. Being an artist and defying norms to reclaim my life is a courageous act - and so my artworks are naturally bold and and powerful. While I had been a joyfully creative child, as an adolescent, I started using drawing as a way of expressing myself, often hiding away my most personal creations. It was only much later, in my mid-twenties, that I shared with my mentor some of these deeply personal creations, including a sketch of three entangled women's bodies, emanating outwards. In these drawings, I had found a way to express my pain. But in this pain and in this sketch, my mentor found the first inklings of someone who could be an artist. He referred to this sketch of three women, as my ‘masterpiece’.
Encouraged by my mentor, I went on a long, arduous journey afterwards; spanning countries, exhibitions, studios, bachelor’s degrees, an award and a grant, many battles, and small and big wins - all in the pursuit of being an artist. It is only after being educated as an artist, that when I look back at my little sketches and doodles, can I see them as bold, raw, authentic artworks. It was only after being trained, that I was able to take what I now call 'Journal Art', to larger sheets of acid-free paper, often nearly covered in charcoal, and sometimes archival ink. The artworks may have become larger, and not that secretive anymore, but their essence still remains the same. Most recently, in January 2026, I completed a large artwork, titled ‘Breaking Free’, inspired by the small sketch I had created in 2008, that my mentor had referred to as my 'masterpiece'. The finished work, created only 18 years after the sketch that inspired it; ‘Breaking Free’, as well as many other 'Journal Artworks', are now a symbol of overcoming; and of having journeyed far and wide.
Creating art is my way of having a voice, of speaking for myself, and in that, standing up for women around the world. My artworks are often raw and intense, portraying the soul of a woman who has lived an extraordinary life - one of exemplary courage in the face of many battles. I choose to live a meaningful, purposeful life despite all the obstacles. Since art has been life-saving for me, I encourage others to not only practice art as a hobby, but also believe in themselves as artists. My longer term goals include instituting scholarships for Indian students to study art abroad, being an advocate for mental health, and continuing to live a life that is a work of art in itself.
